New Delhi, January 4: Exiled Tibetans led by five organizations have announced a plan to take a major protest march from India to Tibet demanding China for the peaceful resolution of Tibet issue ahead of the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

The groups announced that hundreds of Tibetans would depart from Dharmsala, the home of the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan Government-in-Exile, on March 10, the day Tibetans would be observing the 49th anniversary of the failed uprising against Chinese rule, with the hope to walk to Lhasa, Tibet's capital.

The long-distance protest march is part of a series of global protest actions Tibetans and their support groups are planning to disrupt the symbolic relay of the Olympic torch as it is carried through 20 cities on five continents.

"China is hoping to showcase itself as a global leader and forever silence any challenges to its rule in Tibet," Tsewang Rigzin, president of the Tibetan Youth Congress, told reporters at a press conference in New Delhi.

Mr Tsewang urged Tibetans around the world to take to the street and take actions wherever China takes the torch, but called on Tibetans to refrain from using violent means.

"The march to Tibet is an initiative by exiled Tibetans to strengthen Tibetan resistance by taking the struggle home," Mr Tsewang said.

The group members, however, refrained from divulging further details on the march, including the route they planned to take.

China has ruled Tibet since Communist troops forcefully invaded the region in 1950. China's illegal occupation of the once peaceful cultural nation subsequently resulted in the death of an estimated 1.2 million Tibetans and destruction of thousands of monasteries.

Besides, China is accused of carrying on unabated gross violation of Human rights in Tibet, other ethnic regions and China at large.

With the world's attention drawn on China as it prepares to host the 2008 Games in China, Tibetans have long vowed not to miss the moment to press for their cause.

And Tibetans are not alone in their struggle. There are other endless lists of international activists and human rights campaigners desperately pushing China for a better change and expose their wrongdoings.

TIBETANS LAUNCH HISTORIC MOVEMENT AHEAD OF BEIJING OLYMPICS

Global Uprising to Include Exiles' March to Tibet

Five leading Tibetan organizations announced today the launch of the "Tibetan People's Uprising Movement", a new coordinated Tibetan resistance effort in the lead up to the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The Games will take place only months before the 50th anniversary of the 1959 Tibetan National Uprising against China's invasion of Tibet. The movement's organizers are calling on Tibetans worldwide to join protests during the Beijing Olympics and support a return march of exile Tibetans to their homeland.

"Today, in the spirit of the 1959 Uprising and in memory of the courageous Tibetans who sacrificed their lives for Tibet's independence and continue to resist China's brutal occupation, we are launching a unified movement to bring about an end to Chinese rule in Tibet," said Tsewang Rigzin, President of Tibetan Youth Congress.

The organizing committee said that China's leadership is using the Beijing Olympics as a platform to gain international acceptance and to legitimize its illegal rule in Tibet. After almost five decades of oppression and cultural assimilation, the situation inside Chinese occupied Tibet is dire.

"We are calling on Tibetans worldwide to join us at this critical moment when China is trying to spread its Olympics propaganda," said B. Tsering, President of the Tibetan Women's Association. "Together, we will seize this unprecedented opportunity to voice Tibetan resistance and reinvigorate our freedom struggle."

The march to Tibet is an initiative by exile Tibetans to strengthen Tibetan resistance by taking the struggle home. The march will commence on March 10th, the 49th commemoration of the Tibetan National Uprising in Tibet. Tibetans worldwide will engage in non-violent direct actions and mass protests during China's Olympic torch relay and the Games themselves.

"Our message to China's leadership is loud and clear that after fifty years, Tibetans in exile are determined to return to our homeland and be reunited with our Tibetan brothers and sisters," said Ngawang Woeber, President of the Gu Chu Sum, the ex-political prisoners' association.

THE TIBETAN PEOPLE'S UPRISING MOVEMENT

Background
The Tibetan people stand at an important crossroads as two historic moments approach; the Beijing 2008 Olympics in China and the 50th commemoration of the March 1959 uprising against China's occupation of Tibet. The Chinese government is attempting to use the Olympic Games as a platform to gain acceptance as a global leader and to promote its propaganda on Tibet. Beijing sees this moment as an opportunity to legitimize its rule in Tibet once and for all.

The Olympics will take place just months before Tibetans mark 50 years since His Holiness the Dalai Lama and tens of thousands of Tibetans were forced to escape Tibet and Chinese troops violently crushed the popular uprising in Lhasa and across the country. More than 1 million Tibetans have since died as a direct result of China's occupation. At this critical time - as the Chinese leadership wages an unrelenting war on Tibetan religion and culture, and is drastically increasing the rate of Chinese population transfer into Tibet - the very survival of Tibetans as a people is at stake.

It is time for Tibetans to take control of our future through a unified and coordinated resistance movement. We must now proclaim to the Chinese and to the world that the desire for freedom still burns in the heart of every Tibetan, both inside Tibet and in exile. In particular, the time has come for Tibetans in exile to boldly demonstrate that even after 50 years, we long to return to our homeland. A return march from exile in India back home to Tibet is being organized and will revive the spirit of the 1959 Uprising.

The 2008 Olympics will mark the culmination of almost 50 years of Tibetan resistance in exile. We will use this historic moment to reinvigorate the Tibetan freedom movement and bring our exile struggle for freedom back to Tibet. Through tireless work and an unwavering commitment to truth and justice, we will bring about another uprising that will shake China's control in Tibet and mark the beginning of the end of China's occupation.

Declaration

In the spirit of the 1959 Uprising and in memory of all the courageous Tibetans who sacrificed their lives for Tibet's independence and continue to resist China's tyrannical rule, we declare the commencement of the Tibetan People's Uprising Movement.

The Tibetan People's Uprising Movement is a global movement of Tibetans inside and outside of Tibet taking control of our political destiny by engaging in direct action to end China's illegal and brutal occupation of our country. Through unified and strategic campaigns we will seize the Olympic spotlight and shine it on China's shameful repression inside Tibet, thereby denying China the international acceptance and approval it so fervently desires.

We call on Tibetans inside Tibet to continue to fight Chinese domination and we pledge our unwavering support for your continued courageous resistance. We call on Tibetans in exile and supporters in the free world to take every opportunity to protest China's Olympic Games and support the Tibetan people's struggle for freedom. We call on Tibetans everywhere to support the return march of Tibetan patriots to our homeland, Tibet.

Demands

As we move forward with our movement we, the Tibetan People, commit ourselves whole-heartedly to this effort and demand that the Chinese government immediately:

1. Remove all obstacles to the unconditional return of His Holiness the Dalai Lama to Tibet and his rightful place as leader of the Tibetan people. The Dalai Lama is revered by Tibetans as our sole and undisputed leader. In recent years, Tibetans inside Tibet have repeatedly called for the Dalai Lama's return for which many have been persecuted and still languish in prison.

2. Begin dismantling the colonial occupation of Tibet. Chinese colonial rule along with the transfer of Chinese into Tibet is marginalizing the Tibetan population and reducing us to a minority in our own country. The very survival of the Tibetan people and nation, represented by our language, religion, culture and traditions, is gravely threatened.

3. Release all Tibetan political prisoners from any form of detention and restore human rights to the Tibetan population. Thousands of Tibetans – including the young Panchen Lama Gendun Chokyi Nyima, Chadrel Rinpoche, Lobsang Tenzin, Trulku Tenzin Delek, Bangri Rinpoche, Dolma Kyab, Rungye A'drak, and Adruk Lopo – are being persecuted for the peaceful ex-pression of their religious and political beliefs and all Tibetans living inside Tibet are systematically denied their basic human rights.

The Tibetan People also demand that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) immediately:

1. Cancel the 2008 Olympics in Beijing and never again consider China as a potential host country of the Olympic Games until Tibet is free. The Chinese government is committing cultural genocide in Tibet and does not deserve the honour of hosting such an internationally celebrated event.

Brute Force Unable to Suppress Tibetans' Longing for Freedom

December 04, 2007

With less than a year left before the Beijing Olympics, China has taken extreme measures to fulfill their quest to become a renowned world leader and has taken extreme measures to build their image as an ideal location for the international event. In doing so, the Chinese government has shown the full extent of its paranoia. Beginning with the attempted enthronement of Tenzin Delek Rinpoche's portrait by a few monks during a reception ceremony at Nalanda Thekchen Jangchup Choeling Monastery on July 18, 2007, in Lithang, the Chinese Government has been scampering all over Eastern Tibet, in a futile effort to suppress Tibetans' just call for freedom in Tibet. O'dho and Apha Bhomo were arrested a day later on the alleged charge of instigating others to support Tenzin Delek Rinpoche and to go and meet him.

A mass gathering of more than 10,000 Tibetans in Lithang demanded the immediate and unconditional release of Rongay Adak, who was arrested on August 1, 2007. Adak had publicly called for the long life of His Holiness the Dalai Lama and his return to Tibet on that day. He also shouted slogans for the immediate release of political prisoners and called for freedom in Tibet. Following his arrest, five others: Adruk Lupoe, Kunkhyen, Jare Lothok, Adruk Kalgyam and Jamyang Tenzin were also arrested on the alleged crime of "endangering national security" and "inciting to split the country".

On November 20, 2007, a court in Dartsedo sentenced Rongay Adak to 8 years in prison after an unfair trial. Three others - Adruk Lupoe, Kunkhyen and Jare Lothok - were respectively sentenced to 10 years, 9 years and 3 years in prison without any trial. The whereabouts of Adruk Kalgyam and Jamyang Tenzin are not known.

The destruction of the two storey high Guru Padmasambava's statue in Purang County on August 29, 2007, is a clear indication that religious freedom is being ruthlessly crushed in Tibet. The local Tibetans financed and constructed the Guru Rinpoche's statue. The co-founder of the statue, Khampa Lama, has been arrested. Tibetans in Tibet were also barred from celebrating when His Holiness the Dalai Lama was conferred the Congressional Gold Medal award on October 17, 2007. On that day, monks from Drepung Monastery, Lhasa, white-washed His Holiness' old palace as a mark of celebration. Thousands of Chinese paramilitary surrounded the monastery and stopped the monks from whitewashing and carrying out other religious activities. The monks resisted the Chinese intrusion into their practice of religious rights and three monks were arrested following the incident.

China's State Administration of Religious Affairs (SARA) introduced the Order No.5 that contained 14-article measures on reincarnation, which came into effect on September 1st, 2007. The Order No. 5 openly exhibited Chinese Government's rampant attempt to control religious leaders in Tibet. Tibetan Buddhists all over the world, including those in Tibet, will never accept this ridiculous interference, in our religious affairs, especially from the atheistic Chinese Regime.

Routine incursions into Tibetans' lives by the Chinese government, and obvious discrimination against Tibetan people are not limited to the political arena. Recently, on November 20, 2007, in Driru County (Kham region), following a minor quarrel, three teenage monks - Dhondup Dorji (age 16), Yeshi Thokmey (age 15), and Tsering (age 14) - were beaten by Chinese shopkeepers. The Public Security Bureau (PSB) arrested the monks, and the sixteen-year-old, Dorji, was reportedly beaten severely and is currently hospitalized. The whereabouts of the other two monks are not known. On the other hand, the Chinese shopkeepers were neither arrested nor beaten by the PSB. This clearly shows the Chinese government's purportedly discriminative action against Tibetan people in their own land. The PSB's highhandedness in dealing with the three teenage monks sparked public protest in front of the PSB officials. More than one thousand five hundred Tibetans protested and demanded the immediate release of the monks. Instead of reassuring the protestors of the monks' wellbeing, PSB dispatched more than two thousand paramilitary soldiers from Lhasa to quell the peaceful protestors, who were ruthlessly put down. This led to the arrest of around two hundred Tibetan people.

Tibetans in Tibet are relentless in their pursuit of basic human rights, and they have always demonstrated a strong commitment to non-violent means of protest. Chinese on the other hand, have always resorted to brute force to suppress Tibetans' call for freedom. Tibetans in Tibet and their actions are an important lesson to the Chinese regime that violent force can never stifle a person's wish for freedom. Tibetans in exile salute the bravery of our brothers and sisters in Tibet. We the under mentioned Tibetan NGO's representing the exile community wish to reiterate our brothers and sisters in Tibet that we are listening to their call for justice and definitely we are here to spread these instances of misfortune and make China accountable for their brutal actions.

Dharamsala celebrates the awarding of the US Congressional Gold Medal award to His Holiness the Dalai Lama of Tibet

Organised by 9 NGOs and co-ordinated by ITSN

Tibetans all over the world celebrated the conferment of the Congressional Gold Medal Award, the highest united Sates Civilian Honour, to His Holiness the XIV Dalai Lama of Tibet on the 17th of October, 2007.

The award, considered the most significant international tribute to His Holiness since he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989, has pulled in thousands of Tibetans and foreigners alike in Dharamsala who witnessed the ceremony live on two huge screens put up at the Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts. With co-ordination from ITSN, 9 NGOs organised a day-long fun filled events followed by a live proceedings of the award ceremony that was relayed (live) on VOA in the evening (IST) of the 17th October.

The fire works that went off soon after His Holiness was awarded the US Congressional Gold Medal were marvelous to watch, despite having disturbed the initial speeches of the Dalai Lama. Nevertheless, the show went off superbly. Everyone from child to adult; Tibetans to foreigners enjoyed it to the fullest.

Tibetan Youth Congress, Tibetan Women's Association, National Democratic Party of Tibet, GuChuSum movement of Tibet, Students for a Free Tibet - India Chapter, Dotoe Cholka, Do-mey Cholka, U-Tsang Cholka and Choksum Chikdril Association organised the events with co-ordination from International Tibet Support Network.

The day-long programme include an official function in the morning followed by traditional performances and a tug 'O' war game amongst 10 men's team and 7 women's team separately. Prizers were also given out to the winners and the runner-ups. At the end of the day, all the presidents of the organising committee and the guests played a musical chair to cheer up the already pumped-up thousands of Tibetans. That was indeed a good show filled with extreme joy and fun. General public -- specifically -- showed keen interest to watch them become childlike, as they haven't seen any of them indulging in such fun game earlier.

We, as organisers haven't anticipated such crowd to turn up. This was, perhaps the most outstanding celebration we ever had for long long time since the 1989 Nobel Peace Prize award to His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

Tibetan Welfare Office in association with the people of Dharamsala organised a day-long programme the following day i.e. on the 18th of October. The morning saw an official function by TGiE.

The spirit of collective effort paid its dividend, where both the organisers and public returned home truly satisfied and fresh even after exhausting day-long programme that stretched till 1 am the next day.

Phayul[Saturday, September 01, 2007 13:09] By Phurbu Thinley

Dharamsala, August 31 - Four leading NGOs which recently teamed up for a joint Tibetan People's Movement, in run up to the 2008 Beijing Games, Friday issued a protest statement condemning Communist China's bylaw making selection of Tibetan reincarnate lamas subject to approval by the atheist state.

The protest statement comes a day before the stringent regulation actually goes into effect.

The order forbidding naming of any reincarnate lamas, called "Living Buddhas" in Chinese, without prior approval from Chinese Communist State will come into effect on September 1. The new regulations, titled Order No. 5 by the State Administration for Religious Affairs (SARA), was issued on July 18 and bans naming of any reincarnate lama solely by traditional Tibetan Buddhist procedures.

Calling the regulation a clear violation of international legal guarantees of religious freedom and suppression of religious freedom in Tibet; Tibetan Women's Association (TWA), Gu-Chu-Sum- Ex-political Prisoners Movement of Tibet, National Democratic Party of Tibet (NDPT) and Students for a Free Tibet, India (SFT) said, "Atheist Communist China has no obligation to interfere in the Tibetan Buddhist traditions" in their two-page statement.

The move by Communist state is seen by many as a design to undermine the influence of the Dalai Lama and other influential Tibetan Buddhist heads that are largely critical of Chinese rule over Tibet.

The statement upholds His Holiness the Dalai Lama as the supreme political and spiritual leader venerated by Tibetan people, and demands Chinese government to respect the same in the greater interest of China.

"The selection and recognition of reincarnate lamas is solely a Buddhist practice, and there is no way China can interfere in this ancient and unique Buddhist tradition for undue political gains over Tibet" the statement stated.

The spokesperson of the four organizations, Ven. Ngawang Woeber, President of GuchuSum said that they were working on a petition letter to be submitted to the Chinese Government and to concern institutions protesting the move by Chinese Government.

Ironically the religious bylaw by an atheist government comes into effect on the eve of Tibetan Democracy Day, commemorated by Tibetan exiles every September 2.

"We have great reserve of faith that such a fraudulent and repressive move by Communist State of China on peaceful spiritual practice would be met by condemnation by all other religious institutions of the world", the statement says.

As Tibetans in Tibet continue to be under Communist Chinese regime, in exile, Tibetan political and spiritual leader, Dalai Lama has long introduced a modern democratic government-in exile for Tibetans.

With 2008 Beijing Games less than a year away, Communist Party is known to be tightly squeezing social life of Tibetan people in Tibet, especially spiritual aspects of Tibetan Buddhism in an ardent effort to undermine the very root that keeps Tibetan people strongly together

INDIA-TIBET Football Match in Delhi
Dated: July 31, 2007

In the first ever historic event India will play Tibet in a friendly football match on the 4th August 2007, at the Nehru Stadium in New Delhi. India will be represented by DELHI-XI, while TEAM TIBET of Tibetan Football Association will play for Tibet.

Besides this friendly football match, there will also be a half marathon participated by people representing their countries to show the global support for Tibet. China is celebrating with much fanfare and glamour its one year countdown to 2008 Beijing Olympics starting on the 8th August, 2007. China will parade the Tibetans in colourful costumes along with the people from other occupied countries like Mongolia and the Islamic East Turkistan (Xinjiang) to show "unity" in China. They may even use Chinese dancers in Tibetan costumes as they did during Chinese President Hu Jintao's visit to the US last year.

The news of INDIA-TIBET football match has reached Tibetans all over India and thousands of Tibetans are already on their way to Delhi, coming in packed buses and in trains from various Tibetan refugee camps in North and Central India and Nepal. Ten thousand Tibetan Buddhist monks are coming from various monasteries in South India. Many Indian former Olympians like cricketer L.Balaji, cricketer Madan Lal, hockey player Baskaran, sprinter Shiny Wilson have agreed to come in solidarity with the Tibetan freedom movement. Indian volunteers from different colleges are working with the organizers.

One of the organizers, Mr Choeying of Student for a Free Tibet said: "China will use the Olympics to legitimize China's colonization of Tibet". While Mr Kalsang, the long time manager of the Tibetan football club said "we have played in Greenland, Iceland, Cyprus and Switzerland. We have played few Indian clubs, but we are playing Delhi-XI for the first time, so our boys are very excited about it."

With a strong military presence China continues to maintain its occupation of Tibet since 1949. Today with "new developmental schemes" like building dams, mining and the active trends of urbanization in the pasturelands where Tibetan nomads lived, China is strengthening its colonial control of Tibet. Tibetan nomads and farmers have become dishwashers in the snazzy, new Chinese roadside restaurants and guesthouses on the highways and at railway stations.

Tibet shares closest historical and cultural relations with India and today, India bears direct political and environmental repercussions due to an increased Chinese presence in Tibet. Ecological damages in the Tibetan Plateau, due to deforestation, the train links with Beijing, the proposed road to Everest and the Three Gorges Dam are issues of global concerns.

Four Tibetan Non-governmental organizations are spearheading the 4th August initiative, which is taking place in the name of the Tibetan People's Movement:
1. National Democratic Party of Tibet, www.ndpt.net (NDPT)
2.GuChuSum ex-politicalprisonersassociation www.guchusum.org (GU CHU SUM)
3. Tibetan Women's Association, www.tibetanwomen.org (TWA)
4. SFT (SFT)

Tibetan People's Movement
July 29, 2007

The Organizing Committee of the Tibetan People's Movement held a second public meeting at Tibetan Refugee Camp in Majnu-ka-tilla, Delhi, on the 29th of July, 2007. Over 200 residents of Majnu-ka-tilla attended the meeting. Four heads (spokespersons) of the Organizing Committee addressed the public, highlighting the significance of the upcoming 4 th August event at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.

The 2008 Beijing Olympics offers a unique opportunity for Tibetans to draw attention to the Tibetan cause on a completely new platform. Choeying, National Coordinator of Students for a Free Tibet, made the concept of Team Tibet clear to the audience. Choeying said, "the goal of Team Tibet is to highlight Tibetans' lack of freedom as a nation, which is symbolized by their inability to participate in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Team Tibet is a global movement challenging the Chinese government to engage in meaningful efforts to resolve the issue of Tibet".

The spokespersons declared at the gathering that every one attending the 4th August event, including the football players and the marathon runners, will wear a black arm band to support and to show solidarity with the 14 hunger strikers who are currently on their 24 th day without food.

A T-shirt with a message, "Bring Tibet to the 2008 Games" and "I Stand for Tibet" was launched at the gathering. The T-shirt became an instant hit and over 400 T-shirts were sold within a few hours. Donations were also given.

The Chinese government will use the Olympics and the global attention that Beijing will get in 2008 to legitimize its claim over Tibet. At the same time, Tibetans are also presented with a unique platform to divert the media spotlight that the Beijing Olympics will get towards the Tibet issue.

Olympics have been used in the past as a stage to make political statements. For example, in 1968 in New Mexico, two black Americans made history when they staged a silent protest against racial discrimination. Thus, in the same manner, we want to Bring Tibet to the 2008 Games in any form and any manner.

Later, the footage of the 25th of April, 2007, Mt. Everest base camp action was shown to the crowd of enthusiastic Tibetans. The footage is about one Tibetan and four Americans who protested against China bringing their Olympics Torch to Mt. Everest in Tibet.

A documentary film, "The Forbidden Team" on the Tibetan National Football Team was also shown to the public. The film reveals the difficulties the Tibetan National Football Team faces and how they overcome obstacles to play its first international friendly match with Greenland in Denmark. The crowd watching the movie was so emotionally charged that they erupted out of joy and cheered and screamed with delight when the Tibetan Team scored their first goal.

Even though, the Tibetan National Team lost their first international game, the players and Tibetans as a whole left the stadium victorious – victorious of having represented Tibet at the international level despite stern warnings and hindrance from the Chinese Government.

The gathering at the Tibetan refugee camp in Majnu-ka-tilla flagged off its Delhi campaign on a very positive note. The sense of joy and appreciation from the masses for Team Tibet reflects their enthusiasm and support for the Olympic campaign.

Tibetan People's Movement
July 23, 2007

For Immediate Release:

Progress in Tibetan People's Movement

The main purpose of this press conference is to brief the media on the progress of the Tibetan People's Movement which is organizing a major Tibetan campaign against the Beijing 2008 Olympics in New Delhi on the 4th August. Tibetan People's Movement was created in the heated public activism last year in November and since then the various NGOs that created it has not only given leadership, coordination and resources but has been responsible for some of the most successful campaign in the recent times.

The 4th August Tibetan campaign in New Delhi is being organized by the Tibetan people's Movement and presently there are four Tibetan NGOs who are working together for it: Tibetan Women's Association (TWA), GuChuSum: Ex-Political Prisoners Movement, National Democratic Party of Tibet (NDPT) and Students for a Free Tibet (SFT).

As declared during the press conference on June 30th, the Tibetan People's Movement's Team Tibet Campaign will be held on August 4, 2007 in New Delhi. The campaign will be organize an "International Marathon Run" participated by international runners and a friendly India-Tibet exhibition football match between the Tibetan National Team and Delhi State Team, Delhi-XI.

Representatives of the 4 NGOs have been receiving overwhelming moral and financial support from the Tibetan community both in India and abroad. Our campaigners have been touring various Tibetan refugee camps, schools, monasteries all over India. We continue to appeal for such support and participation.

Clarification

Since there is going to be two Tibetan campaigns in Delhi during the first week of August for the same purpose of campaigning against Beijing Olympics, we are getting to know that in some quarters of the Tibetan community, some misunderstanding and confusion is prevailing, especially after the withdrawal of Tibetan Youth Congress from the organizing committee. For that we would like to clarify presenting the history, the objectives and importance of the campaign.

he August 4th event is aimed directly against the 2008 Beijing Olympics. The Chinese government will use the global platform that Olympics provide to legitimize their claim over Tibet and gain international credibility as a peaceful and unified country. Through this campaign, the 4 NGOs will publicize China's atrocious communist rule in Tibet and highlight the appalling human rights situation in Tibet. Like other nations, the Tibetan people also want to be represented at the Olympics under Tibet's national flag.

Team Tibet

The concept of Team Tibet was initially discussed during International Tibet Support Network meeting from May 1-4, 2006 at the Club House, Dharamsala. Delegates of all the major Tibetan NGOs and Tibet Support Groups (TSG) attending the meeting passed a resolution to form a Team Tibet and to campaign for Team Tibet to be represented at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Likewise, on May 3rd, Olympics' Campaign Working Group convened for a brainstorming session in Dharamsala before attending the 5th TSG meet in Brussels, Belgium, that was participated by all major NGOs. It was decided at the meeting to launch a preliminary campaign titled, "Tug of War". The campaign was organized by 5 NGOs in Dharamsala on May 13th, 2007 to highlight Team Tibet and they are TWA, NDPT, SFT, RTYC and Gu Chu Sum movement for Tibet.

At the 5th TSG conference in Brussels from May 11-14, 2007, organized by Tibetan Government in Exile, Olympic campaign was prioritized amongst other campaigns for Tibet. The concept of Team Tibet was unanimously endorsed as the most practical and effective campaign by 315 delegates representing all Tibetan NGOs and TSGs from 56 nations. This conference was followed by an ITSN conference on May 15th. At that meeting, 4 main elements of the Olympic campaign was identified; Team Tibet, One Year Countdown (August 4 and August 8), Torch Relay, and Public Engagement and related campaigns.

Thus, 5 NGOs in Dharamsala met on June 8th, 2007 to strategize the Olympic campaign and agreed for a Tibetan People's Movement to be held on August 4th, 2007 in Delhi consisting of International Run for Tibet and a friendly football match between Tibetan National Team and Indian Team.

TYC's withdrawal from the Organizing Committee

A press conference was held on June 30th by the 5 organizing NGOs to announce the August 4th campaign. However, on July 5th, Tibetan Youth Congress (TYC) sent a letter to the organizing committee notifying its withdrawal from the Committee and their plan to carry out an indefinite hunger strike campaign at Jantar Mantar, New Delhi that began on July 8th. The remaining Organizing Committee convened again to re-strategize the planned campaign on August 4. We are aware about the hunger strikers' dire physical condition by 4th August, and accordingly we made appropriate changes in our original action plan of the day.

The Organizing Committee consisting of the major Tibetan NGOs have successfully organized campaigns when we are together and united as in the past track record like the joint campaigns on Tenzin Delek Rinpoche's release, Banning Animal Skin Products, the protest against Golmud to Lhasa railway, Nangpala Shooting protest, the Hu Jintao visit protest and March 10 protest this year.

The Organizing Committee believes Tibetan Youth Congress to be one of the most important NGOs in the Tibetan community in exile and we recognize the significance of the ongoing indefinite hunger strike and the August 8th Mass Campaign. The Organizing Committee is fully supportive of the 14 hunger strikers and respects their courage and sacrifice for the cause of our country's freedom. We appeal to the general public to dissociate from rumors intended at creating a rift and destroy the unity within our community.

The Olympics Campaign is a yearlong campaign aimed at promoting the Tibetan freedom movement. The 4 NGOs appeal to the Tibetan people for their continuous support and participation in all the upcoming Olympic campaigns.
